Not much to tell really, the "usual suspects" gathered at Butterley for a Sunday Sesh where Lady Marilyn proved that not all Caradocs have "no guts"
She merrily performed in the falling temperature with the reg' barely cracked open.
My new MOD brake van was at the tail end ~ many thanks to MTA!

and the W&LLR's newest addition to the loco roster was hauled away to Pentrich Sidings on an ex-Compton Down bogie flat
The Jessie had been brought along by Doug, who was visiting the line for the first time with his trio of Mamod motive power. (Two of which are seen at the top of the thread.
A reformed "alcoholic" and now self confessed "gasser", Doug was still quite taken with this resident meths fired old lady!
Meanwhile, it was nice to see the Caprotti 5 on the main line (Did I mention that I've driven that?!
)
Another cracking day, which saw the time absolutely fly by! ~ Over to "our roving reporter" Doug for more?

Thanks NM, over to me so it seems and the scene was pretty good. Butterley's railway is compactish but also has a sweet tearoom/clubhouse/workshop meaning that there can be more than just playing trains out in the cold
First off was the unpacking and unveiling of my locos...
Red - Deep Thought, blue, Phantom, IP Jessie, Unknown and finally, ornate brass and black, Swordbreaker.
First up to run inbetween trains was Phantom...
On a test train of a gaurd's van just incase any accidents happened :lol:
As she warmed up, she got better and better, much to the cynical amazment of the crowd. Good engine, I will be sorry to see her go. She can only get better.
Next up was the devil child himself, Deep Thought.
It steamed up, blew off, rolled about 5 metres and then decided that once again it was going to go on strike. A full investigation with diagnostic session has been launched at the Works pending arrival of the 'control' parts in order to determine where the fault may be.
Meanwhile, the IP Jessie, DSW No. 5 Unknown was strutting its stuff and proving it was to be a reliable acqusition for the Westwood and Loscoe.
As a result, the deal was sealed and she was loaded up onto the WLLR flat wagon as seen in NM's photographs.
But what did the DougStar Works get in exchange for the Jessie? Ahh....you'll see, as the pride and joy Swordbreaker collected them out of the WLLR transfer siding :-
Onto the siding to couple onto the train of coaches in question...
Couldn't resist...
Great aren't they?:D:D As a result I now have a rake of vintage TR coaches in exchange for the Jessie and spare parts. Cheers to NarrowMinded who also kindly regauged them beforehand!! :D
Meeting of two railways...
Seeing NM's Caradoc really impressed me. It got me thinking, that perhaos Accucraft are not as bad a make as some might have led me to believe. I am now thus looking into streamlining my Mamod fleet and excess coaching stock in order to acquire an Accucraft in the future hopefully.
Unfortunatly, there was to be little running with the TR coaches, as Swordbeaker developed a peculiar malady whereby it would steam freely in reverse but refuse to move an inch in forward as if locked up.
Investigation in the clubhouse allowed Swordbreaker, on cradle, to demonstrate that it could steam and run super efficiently if all was well; in short it ran for 20mins solid in reverse and did two stints so as to faciliate some running in. Also I was able to pinpoint a couple of flaws in the steam system so able to line them up and work them when I got home.
After a long day out, the three little engines settle into their nest. Phantom - lovely engine, cannot fault it. Bravely put on a show for members and Butterley visitors alike.

Deep Thought - no friggin; surprises there, it's humiliated me at every public engagement its been to so far. I hope to make amends on this pending arrival of parts on loan from the WLR as mentioned.

As a postscript for the curious, Monday I disassembled Swordbreaker's front end and took off the offending cylinder block and the reverser block [a PPS fine one]. Oddly, the rogue cylinder was the one that hadn't been sent to Dream Steam for servicing.]
Firstly, I found one of the screws holding the cylinder unit to the frames was loose, somewhat loose - it would explain the leak of steam and hot water.
Also there was a small foreign object, flufflike inbetween the surfaces.
I also loosened the trunion screw third of a turn and then lapped the port faces of the cylinder and reverser block on brasso, then on black ultrafine sand / wet-dry paper. What a world of difference!
I then did some major surgery to bring the main steampipe forward so that it tucked into the reverser block more snugly, and tightened the regulator connection to the boiler turret.
A steamtest at 9:40pm in the freezing garage had a 100% success rate, it steamed and ran like a charm in both directions, so once this was established I let SB run in forward gear until it ran out - 18mins near-nonstop! :shock:
So, a very happy Doug indeed
