Garratt at the South Arbury Railway

Post by garratt100 » Wed Oct 24, 2007 10:09 pm

Here is a Ceylon Government Railways C1 garratt spending a few minutes laying over before it's next turn of duty at the South Arbury Railway.

I am sorry to say I am not normally a Garratt fan, they are impressive I admit, but the one above really grabs me, it's beautiful !

It's the first of a small batch built by Peter Angus.

The cylinders & running gear are from Roundhouse & apart from new frames it's virtually a 'Billy' chassis which forms the basis of each engine unit.

It's a beautiful runner - look out for it on 'Ttarrag Shed' or at the South Arbury Railway!

Very nice model Garratt there Chris. Unfortunately like Jim well out of my price range.

I've been fortunate to find Garratts in steam on my overseas steam photographic tours, and whilst I still have not got my SCSI card removed from my dead computer in order to scan my slides, here's a couple taken with my basic digital camera.
Image
Class 15 No.271, one of the Garratts specially painted blue for the Royal Train in Rhodesia in the 1950s. Now plinthed at Kadoma, Zimbabwe (see here to see how badly the colour has faded - http://www.geoffs-trains.com/Museum/kadoma.html ).

And the Royal Headboard.
Image
Class 16A No.611 on the turntable at Bulawayo, Zimbabwe in June 2007.

Enjoy!

There is no comparison, the Accucraft one may look very nice (although for scale, it's too wide!), but the quality & performance of one of John's is far superior.
So many of the Accucraft NGG16's have been dogged with silly little problems from the start which should never be the case when buying a new loco, especially for that sort of money!!

Don't get me wrong, there are a quantity of good Accucraft NGG16's out there & we've had an excellent runner (John Sowerby's) appear regularly on 'Ttarrag Shed' & also at South Arbury, but we've also had some...er... not so good runners...

It'll be interesting when parts start to wear, how easily replacement parts will be to obtain...

Chris.
