The Downs Light Railway.

Post by Matt » Tue Apr 22, 2008 9:18 pm

I first found out about this line about 2 years ago. I'm not sure if anyone else on this forum has heard of it, but if you haven't, heres some info.

The Downs Light Railway is the oldest private miniture railway in the world. It's 9 inch gauge, and runs through the grounds of Downs School, who operate the railway as an extra-curricular activity for the children. Imagine that one of your lessons was operating a miniture railway!

The line was started in 1925 by the headmaster to teach engineering. The line was well used under this headmaster, but after he left, the railway was hardly used, and when it became unsafe to operate, it was closed. However, a group of former pupils took over the line and restored it. It's now in the ownership of a trust, but is still operated by the children of the school.

Here's the railway's website.

Wish more schools (ie mine  ) had miniature railways in the grounds, looks like a great place to go to school
"What the hell is that?"
"It's a model icebreaker sir."
"It's a bit big isn't it?"
"It's a full scale model sir....."

Yeah, I've got exactly the same view. If I ever become PM, I'm going to provide every secondary school with one. I'd also reverse the findings of the Beeching report, and provide funding fro preserved railways.

Anyone want to vote for me?
