Ingleton Mountain Railway

Local members of NWAG visited Shaun's Ingleton Mountain Railway yesterday evening. The weather stayed kind, but the 'mossies' were a bit of a nuisance as the evening wore on, so SLRpedro took drastic action!

Now for some railway pics of this 'multi- level' line.......

If only they were all mine !

As the night closed in the coach lights were lit for the passengers on the last train of the day......

Thanks for pointing that out Pete, I never noticed and had to take a second look!

I was obviously concentrating on the overall "look" of the railway in the photo's (love the train on the bridge with the fish underneath!!!

T'was a pretty good evening, although the IMR still needs some work doing on it to get full pleasure from running on it

OK, I'm at the planning stage (after a summer of waiting to see what is going to grow where in the new garden). I have thoughts of what I hope to do, and a number of pegs strategically deployed, but no construction has started.

What are your top tips for garden railway design to get "full pleasure" from running? What changes would you make to this line and why? What are its pitfalls, or those of other lines you have visited?

The main issue I had with the IMR was there was a pretty large amount of track, but it wasn't really usuable. The IMR is basically 2 circles, with a line joining them. There are then 2 lines that come off the top circle that can be used to turn the train round but they face the same way as the line joining up from the lower circuit, ie you had to reverse up them or run the loco round. This leaves you stuck going round and round the upper circuit, not able to use most of the layout. Basically I like lines to be easy to use but also fun (plenty of siding is good as well) The IMR would be great if the line joing the upper and lower circuits was changed direction, because then you could run from the lower to the upper, round for a few circuits, then round the return loop on the upper section and back onto the lower circuit (where you could then run round to do it again). As for other lines, well I can't think of any major pitfalls with any others I've run on (basically all circuits, some with return loops built in to allow you to change direction) apart from mine, because it is a dumb bell not a circuit and therefore a greater then average chance of having a head on crash then on a circuit!

Thanks, that makes sense. Sounds like something like that could be quite usable while running on your own (when stopping to run round is no great hassle), but very tricky on an open day.

Great pics of a lovely looking loco. I love the position of the cylinders on Tom Rolt. Shame it looks so ugly in 45mm gauge though...
