New Steam Loco

Post by Dr. Bond of the DVLR » Sat Dec 05, 2009 10:17 pm

Bearing in mind that I allready have a Millie, Vincent and Excelsior there are two locos playing on my mind at the moment. With my birthday looming I am facing a bit of a dilema.
Do I go for the Blue caradoc in as new condition at 450 pounds,
Do I go for an R/C bertie in Blue with copper chimney cap for 390 pounds,
or do I save my money for stonleigh or what everelse comes along?
What do we think?

Same, for the reasons I've explained to you already Mr. B.
The Caradoc is your railway's blue, practically brand new so not worn out, has reversable valve gear (great on your line's uppy downy state), and has R/C fitted easily without the extra wagon behind it.

Blue Caradoc, hands down. A pretty- and unusual, in blue- locomotive that is technically superior to a Bertie, and as Pete said- dead easy to fit r/c to.

That is the caradoc, what do we think?
He says it runs fine and the only fault is a slight mark in the side tank as can be seen in the photos

That link doesn't work for me.

Do you know/ trust the seller? I assume that's through another forum or word of mouth and not eBay or some other totally unknown source. I only ask as my eBay Caradoc was a dog...

That does look mint! Near enough anyway. And the blue really does suit them. I'm not on the 16mm e-group which may be why it didn't work- the photos do though.

I'd say that's a much safer bet than purchasing off eBay. I'd consider trying to knock him down a bit though- £525 new from track-shack, so it's not a massive saving over "new", and the new ones are a little more detailed- rivetted smokebox etc, and of course are brand new!

I'd try and get at least £25, possibly more off the asking price but that's just me- that'd go some way to converting it to r/c for example, if that's your thing. How long has it been up for? I think I sold mine- with r/c, but much more used, for a fair bit less than that.

I had been advised to buy second hand locos at two thirds of the original price which is why I thought 400 was a sensible price. 450 may be the closest thing I suppose,
The only problems with it are the mark and no waruntee as not new, I shall use these to get thye price down if I do go for it!

I think a third of the original price is a bit optimistic, these do tend to hold their value- even 2/3 might be a little optimistic, although people do get lucky of course.

If you could get it for £400 I'd consider it a good deal. £425 is OK. If it's been on sale with no offers for a while I'd say you are in with a good chance at £400. No warantee isn't really a huge problem as Mr Pearse seems happy to sort out any problems, and it's not like they really go properly wrong, things just seem to come loose every now and again, like the timing... I assume it's sold with the certificates and advertised in "good running order"? I'm also guessing you'll be buying it from a distance and won't get to see it run before buying. It's always a bit of a gamble but I'm sure it'll be fine. It looks totally unmessed- with. And as for the scuff, I just wouldn't worry about it- the real things got scratched too!

Is the scratch on the RH side tank, exactly where a nameplate would sit very nicely by any chance?

Yup- name plates would fit nicely, I'll see if it is still there, consult the domestics (I am sure the railway could do with another loco to help build the extension!!) and see what I can do!

That mark is minute anyway, and it could even be just a bit of dirt/dust - hard to tell from the picture... And if it was a mark, it looks like you could even T-Cut it out!

Again, I think it looks spot on.

Treading where others might not...do you need another loco, what else does your line need...a railway is more than a loco

But it looks good and the price very reasonable even if its not perfect

You were very lucky however! You could wait a long time for one to come up at that price.

Oh gods, he wants 500 pounds for it including postage and says he won't budge.
My parents told me that I can buy a car or food for a few months at uni for that and not to be silly.
I do allready have 3 locos, shame though as it is lovely...
Should I try to get it for 450 and not bother if he says no?
There is allways the second hand a stonleigh and by then I'll proabably have close to 1000 pounds (I have a new piano student from christmas onwords!!)

Walk away at £500. I'd save your money if I were you- or put it towards a car, sensible thing to do really.

A car maybe, but then you have to learn to drive it (and be old enough first) and buy fuel and insurance and all that stuff
Do you go to Uni?
(Answer)
In which case you don't need to buy food!!

Wait 'till Stoneleigh, there was a Roundhouse 'Carrie' in the latest 16mm mag for £500, so you never know what you might find there.
