The BM&LO rolling stock thread
I need a way to check clearances on my track, so I decided to build a piece of rolling stock that would be the maximum width for the line, I chose 4 scale feet because that was about the most that will fit through what I already have. I set to work with some glue and popsicle sticks to make a little 4x5x5 scale foot open van type thingy to go on top of one of my prewar Lionel bogies. The end panels have slots that the side panels will slide into so they can be easily removed by the 7/8 scale people for loading and unloading. I have 3 more of these bogies so I plan to use them to make 2 more of these and a little caboose (in this case "little caboose" is pretty much American for brake van).
Here you can see the comically small bogie...

I really like the look of that!
A wash with wire wool (and maybe some rusty nails) dissolved in vinegar would give the woodwork a lovely worn look (beware though, it won't cover glue!), or I think others use dilute ink.
I've got a "maximum clearance" van too, very handy for clearing vegetation before a run - I always underestimate the amount I need to trim if I do it by eye...
Cheers,
Andrew
