By 'eck...those three chaps earned their rice that day, shoving that lot around!

Seriously though... why does a pantograph lift up from the roof of the coach as it leaves the station?

Surely it's powered by the overhead line and not steam driven?

Maybe the loco is battery powered recharged from the overhead cable? Don't think much of the loco's sound card. Perhaps I should send them an email drawing their attention to the MyLocoSound cards.

The train shown is the Botchan Ressha. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botchan_Ressha. The diesel replica loco is used for a tourist service, but one of the lines original Krauss steam locos is stuffed and mounted in a park near the line.

The loco is diesel powered and if you look carefully you'll see a puff of exhaust smoke when it revs up before moving. It appears to have a sound system to make puffing noises like a steam train. As usual, there's a prototype for everything!!!

The tourist train runs on an electric tram line. Presumably the tram signal system works through the overhead wire and the pantograph is fitted on the ersatz steam train to operate the signals as it runs along.

The preserved loco is how I come to know about the line. Aster made a kit of that preserved Krauss and I have one (somewhat modified) in service on my timber tram.......

Graeme

ps. The loco seems to be fitted with it's own turntable underneath which is lowered onto that plate between the rails. Similar to the sort of thing fitted to some road vehicles converted for rail use. Turning the loco would appear to take less effort than hand shunting the trailer car.....

That 1:1 replica looks surprisingly accurate, in spite of it's power plant.

Fascinating. I was expecting the loco to just run around the coachπŸ˜„ Graemes explanation of the pantograph seems to make sense as well. The turntable mechanism also looks a bit more sophisticated than that employed on some of the Wickham trolley cars.
