Hi All

Can anyone help me with these two questions on inside frame skip wagons? There is a ton of info and drawings I can find on outside frame but not inside frame.

1. Operation - Do they hit the wheels when tipped?
I can see (from the interweb) that some internal framed skips and tipping mine cars have bars or stops to stop travel of the titled bucket. For other there doesn't seem to be stops - so does the skip body hit the wheels? on the side? or the tread? I can see that some may be prevented from hitting the wheels by contacting the chassis first - it just seems some bucket V shapes might not let this happen and some have wheel flanges really close to the top of the chassis. Some examples I am interested in are below question 2.

2. Does anyone know where I might find drawings of inside framed skips?

The Bagnall inside frame skip (in the lower picture) doesn't seem to have any method to stop skip body hitting wheels.

And these two John Fowler have stops.

Many mine tippers don't seen to have stops either

I think the lower ones tip until the skip hits the angled plates on the frame?

Those in the other pictures, have reinforcement along the sides, and I think that contacts the frame when tipped?

Just too long since we have been to the railway, - Would have been there this week, probably..
Could have tipped one and photographed it.

Thank you for the reply and ideas Phil. The Fowler's definitely have stop plates. The Bagnall doesn't seem to have anything. The only thing above the the chassis looks to be the bolts for the axle boxes.

I think the reinforcing bars on the skip body are there to act as the contact point on frame/wheels on the wagons in the top pictures.

Many thanks for the reply. I also found this drawing of a mine cart at Wikipedia that shows contact of the bucket with the edge of the wheel tread at the reinforced points when tipped.

It just felt strange that the bucket would hit the wheels...I thought the wheels and any transfer to journals might be needed to be protected more....obviously not! Happy now that I know more..

Looks like those plates bolted to the side of the hopper are designed to protect it from dints caused by the wheels. I suppose the added advantage is that the bucket acts as a brake while the load is being tipped.

Here are some pictures of a skip wagon that was used on sugar cane lines to haul ballast.

It is displayed in the tipped position they may be of some use to your research.
