CRANE FOR FWLR

[FWLR]

Well after some time I have now finished the Crane for the line at our new address, ( It’s been almost a month in the making ) I have really enjoyed building this, but I suspect it may not be to everyones liking, mainly because it may not be to scale. Anne loves it, she would, wouldn’t she so thats all the matters really, it would be able to run behind a loco with another 1 or 2 wagons up front, and it would probably struggle going around some curves, mainly because of the overhang, but it is going to be more of a static display on the line.

I will need to put the photos in 2 posts I think, so please bear with me.

I had already started building the body of the wagon, so no photos of that been done.

We have given the crane a name,

WOODIE. All of the build was done with hand tools only, as you probably can tell. I soaked the coffee stirrers in Boiled Linseed Oil, there was to many to do individually.

For my first real scratch build, apart from the little static Diesel, it as started me of to try other things for the line.

Looks just fine to me Rod, I remember you said a while ago you were building a crane and I have been looking forward to this as I am nuts about cranes!
For a first scratch-build you should feel proud of yourself... size-wise, how big is a crane?..... as big as it needs to be!

Looks good to me Rod. I'm starting to scratch build some wagons too. If anyone doesm't like it, tell them rule 1 applies.

You need a runner wagon now for the jib, and a mess van and you'll have a complete train.

That's a great looking crane, Rod. A darnn sight better tnan my first scratchbuilds. Some really nice touches, it looks proper workmanlike.

Thanks guys, I really did get a lot of pleasure building it. It started of with 3ply, then coffee stirrers on both sides. Ben the drivers mug was a pain to try and source, so I decided to use a bit of my little brain power and had an to cut a piece of the branch I had been keeping to make some logs for the N Gauge stuff I was into, the handle is made out of plasticine and I fixed to it with a small drop of superglue.

Anne is such a strong motivator to me and she shows me so much praise in what I do, she thinks I am so clever for the things I make, I don’t think I do… she does have a kind heart.

Tom I actually measured the height of “WOODIE” from the top of the rails to the top of the cab and it is 150mm in height and the width is 100mm. So it is 15mm lower and 25mm narrower than my RH Billy, “PATRICIA ANNE”. Not bad for a guesstimet I think….

Ian I do have another wagon body to convert to a runner wagon, but it may be a bit of a challenge because of the length of the jib and I am thinking of a brake van or even a small coach maybe for the mess van…… ’s would be very gratefully taken….

It is praise indeed from such great builders like Peter, Rik and others, but I have a very long way to go to achieve such “Godlike Greatness” as theirs …..

They are both impressive Cranes Peter & Rik. Yours Peter looks like you can lift it off when running, but unfortunately I can’t with mine, so that’s why it will be more of a static display

But nothing is going to get started because we are starting to move today (Officially Monday) so it’s going to be a busy week or so, then of course the line to sort out.

Got to get the priorities right, so Anne says anyway ……

Thanks Rod, the crane and match-truck can run as a pair with the jib rising and falling or swivelling with any track undulations.
Good luck with your move, it can be stressful so take it easy and get others to help as much as possible.

Thanks Derek & Mark. I did do too much yesterday, has did Anne, even though we had eldest Daughter, granddaughter and Son-in-law with us, they seem to run at a different pace to us….slow….

So we are both going to take it easier today and just move some small items with youngest daughter, don’t know if her daughter is coming though, she can be a challenge on her own….
