Welsh Highland Railway - Cross Town Rail Link

Post by SillyBilly » Thu Mar 12, 2009 11:09 pm

The first trains were run over the Welsh Highland Railway (Caernarfon)'s Cross Town Rail Link today, I went after school to have a look at the return trip and got some video footage.

Don't blame the driver for the hideous noise the engine is making, my dad is driving it!!! The WHR have a track record of breaking FfR locos when they go over there.

More info see these:

As I put on youtube, good video, although when I had put that comment I had fogoten about what the WHR had done to Blanche, and Prince, and er Harold

They broke the Harold more than once, which is why the visiting locos always come to the FfR, you don't want the Dinas curse getting them, or perhaps it's just the lack of tender loving care.

I'm now getting an idea of why all of the visitors to superpower were different gauges to the WHR!

Shame :( Personally I've always wanted to see one of the VofR tanks or the Brecon Mountain Baldwin visit the WHR - but then I suspect the Rheidol tanks might be a bit wide?

It'd suprise me if either of those locos was wider than a Garratt.
BTW the bit a about visitors was sarcasm.

Its been fixed, apparently the bolts that hold the box which contains the motor for operating the throttle to the engine had rattled loose and it was confusing the electrics. Had they known this was the problem on the day they could have fixed it.

VofR locos wouldn't fit, too wide.

There are already places on phase 4 where the structure gauge is pushed to the limits!

And the VofR engines have GWR Standard gauge flange profile, I hear so wouldn't get through the points.

I went to watch K1 the world's first Garratt return to the WHR after a short stint at the FR for it to finally get painted properly, now ready for its birthday party, the big 100, same age as my Great Grandmother!

Nice pics William, good to seen it in a proper livery at last. Funnily enough I've just found out about the Rheidol engines strange flange profile this week whislt flicking through back editions of the FfR magazine. There was a suggestion that loading gauges would be ok for a V of R engine to run between Dduallt and Blaenau, and that the flanges needed to be checked

Thats a bit odd, as i have been told that the VofR engines would be too wide to go through the WHR (and this is from one of the head civil engineers!) so i would be interesting to know who is right.

This was just after Moutaineer visited the Rheidol in 1986, and apparantyly Prince of Wales would fit between Dduallt and Blaenau (having said that, this idea was sugggested in one of Dan Wilson's editorials, so whether the idea was really a go-er i'm not sure). Of course, most of the way from Dduallt to Blaenau is the deviation which is built to very big clearances, although I would of thought things would be very tight between Tanygrisau and Glan-y-pwll (this topic is testing my FfR location spelling somewhat! )
