Greetings,
I'm looking at these vertical boiler models. Pretty sweet machines. A question: what/where did the prototype locomotives work? What type of rolling stock were they hauling? What type of railroads were they working on?
Thanks!

'Railroads' is a giveaway and there were a few in the US, mainly in the logging industry. The ones I've seen had some sort of superstructure and would be pulling some form of log trucks. See link below. A couple of UK built ones were used in Aust. in the timber industry and they also had roofs fitted.doublereefed wrote: ↑Wed Apr 05, 2017 6:40 am I'm looking at these vertical boiler models. Regner's new loco named Henry would be suitable for this sort of service.
In the UK they were generally an industrial loco, either in factories or quarries, so small trains of 4 wheel wagons. Open trucks, flat trucks, tippers, slate trucks, etc. etc. Chaloner itself worked in the Welsh slate industry, so suitable rolling stock kits are available.

Both the Chaloner and Brunel models are large for SM32, especially in height, so tend to look better with 7/8" scale stock.
Passenger carrying is less likely, but it's your railway. However there were steam railcars that were basically a small VB loco built into a passenger carriage.

Graeme

The Mamod Brunel is not based on any prototypical locomotive, and is certainly too large for SM32. Here's an early Mark I Brunel (on the current Mark III the engine unit has been lowered but the boiler/chimney is about the same height) running with slate wagons - https://youtu.be/JHmlCPxFo1o?t=8m53s

Chaloner has a prototype that lives in the UK. Do a google search and you should find pics of the prototype that Regner based their model off of. Mike

The Penrhyn quarry railway had de wintons, I beleive dinorwic also had a couple of vertically boilered locos, I could scarcely imagine them hauling anything but slate wagons
The regner max, mamod brunel etc are of course too big, these are far more like it

A lot of full size vertically boilered locos were made by Alexander Chaplin, of Glasgow, always referred to as coffee pots (patented 1859), but this was before Charlie Chaplin came along of course
