Doing a bit of pruning down on the sawmill spur and noticed this little fella. He got a bit agitated after a while and opened
his bright violet coloured wings.

I know it's harmless, but Ugh I think the worst insect we have to suffer in the UK (apart from Midges) are Cockchafers (aka May Bug or Doodlebug).

Some years ago we had some guests from Mexico staying with us one September.They were terrified when they saw some DaddyLonglegs...thought they were giant Mossies!

To be fair I thought the same thing the first time I saw a cranefly. Same with a cicada, I thought I'd seen a giant deer fly (and the regular sized ones already bite hard enough!)

If I came across one of those I'm not sure I'd recognise that it was an insect?! I reckon I'd prefer not to know, actually - it's HUGE!

I think Cranefly is the proper name for our 'daddy longlegs'. Apologies if you knew that already.

I had suspected, but had to look it up to be sure. Some people here also call it that, but we also have two very different spiders that go by that nickname-- the harvestman, and the cellar spider.

The one that confused me was maybugs which we call junebugs. They're just starting to come out here so I suppose either name makes sense! But we also have mayflies (or lake flies) which look just like mosquitoes without the bite. They hatch out of the lake in great swarms for a week or so twice a year, forming an audible cloud above the city streets and posing an inhalation risk to joggers. (So much for a quiet Sunday!)
