Loading hoppers for the sand quarry
Re: Loading hoppers for the sand quarry
Stunning Rik - very impressive - you are the home of hopper loaders - I remember you built one a while ago based on a kit (Piko?) that featured on your blog and was the basis for one I built - how you have moved on now though!
Where did I put that uncoupler?
Re: Loading hoppers for the sand quarry
Have now cast an embankment behind the hoppers so they can be loaded from a 2' gauge feeder line.
Of course, most of it is hidden behind the hoppers - but we all know it's there! . .
I've blogged the build in case anyone is interested - https://riksrailway.blogspot.com/2019/0 ... -from.html

That last picture Rik looks almost real life.
The workman who fill the wagons are very tidy, there is no spillage on the tracks at all!

They are a lovely addition to your line Rik and I am particularly impressed with the subtle change in roof-line between the three hoppers to show later constructions as production increased.... nice touch!
The best things in life are free.... so why am I doing this?

Magnifique!
I love the tiny timber 'extension'. Adds to the rustic look. Someone made a mistake in measuring wagon lengths?

Nice. I think the embankment when its weathered will blend in so much, it will look even more real. The trestle is a brilliant addition to the embankment too.
I love the way that some of the boards are lifting with age.. Superb. The tracks look fantastic also, when the birds and everything else get their grip on them....Wow even better.
Think your taking over PB's mantle of Legend..Well not quite yet..
You do seem to have a knack of having you're builds to look so very atmospheric Rik.

This I think is one of your finer creations Rik and I still can't believe the speed with which you do it, if that was me I'd still be thinking about it.

Re: Loading hoppers for the sand quarry
I just didn't fancy a big chunk of concrete extending into the cutting ..... It'll probably get kicked at some point so I may end up casting an extension

Re: Loading hoppers for the sand quarry
This looks fantastic and I hope, despite your careful ageing of it, that the trestle lasts a good long time, it adds a lot of character to an already fascinating scene!
Re: Loading hoppers for the sand quarry
Thanks for the kind comments folks. Just taken couple more photos before the weather takes a turn for the worst.
Seems like the quarry is employing horse power for now - they might be persuaded to move into the 20th century eventually ...

Excellent Rik. Just as we've become accustomed to see from you, but lovely nontheless

Brilliant again Rik...
Just a little point if I may, (I really do hate pointing things out) would the wagons look like they have done some work with a little bit of sand stuck in them....

Rik,
I take my hat off to your modelling creativity, but also to the skill of that horse having pushed those tippers backwards up that incline.

The little shunter looks great in that shot.

Well spotted! I'm thinking of installing a capstan at the end of the siding ......BorisSpencer wrote: βFri Jun 07, 2019 2:26 pm Rik,

Re: Loading hoppers for the sand quarry
Thanks Tom. That was my first ever scratch bash loco build - my take on what Fowler may have produced if they'd made a 3' gauge diesel. I figured diesels were easier than steam locos - basically two rectangular boxes. And then, of course, I complicated things by choosing a loco with a layshaft. Forgot the KISS principle.

Hi Rod
Do you mean the 32mm tipplers? I must get around to properly weathering them. Another job for the to-do list .....

Re: Loading hoppers for the sand quarry
I do Rik. Sorry for being a flipping [Rivet Counter] I really hate pointing silly little things like that.
It doesn't make the build any less spectacular though Rik.
When this flipping rain stops for a few days, maybe I can get out and do some more work on our line, that's after this flipping cough goes also......
The weather people have got their predictions all wrong for this month so far.
