From what various sources have told me the garden railway is the only thing worth visiting for.
Ouch!

At last a rest day so I get a spare 5 mins to add some pics. Some favorites of the day:

A stunning Irish rail car:

Gregs very nice Baldrig:

Theres atleast one forum face and back in there as Brian and Greg get there locos ready for service:

Gareth's Billy and my Mamod sit in the sun:

For those of you wondering about the loco's name:

The reason for it being like me Gareth has no railway and the loco spends most of its life (or death) in a box.

My VoR having a run with Brians very kindly lent coaches:

The rest of the pics can be found at:

Thank you! I used to volunteer occasionally at Amerton when it was there.

Butterley may not have the longest running line but it is certainly a Centre Of Excellence for diesel loco preservation and, if for nothing else, gets a big thumbs-up from me for that.

I always visit if I'm in the area (wife's grandmother lives nearby) but I have yet to see the National Fork Lift Truck Museum open, so that delight still awaits me.

The branch line is more of a.... twig to be honest but as you quite rightly say Tony, the MRC is very welcoming towards the diesel groups and the facilites that the diesel groups have are fantastic unlike another preserved railway in the North West with a very large diesel department but just gives a load of broken promises about facilites that will be provided in the future.

The MRC has everything well set out and even though you cant really spend all day on the trains theres always the museum, Narrow gague and garden railway to look at too.

There probably a few things you should know about the midland railway centre.
They are in dire finacial trouble, they have alot of debt hanging over them and are struggling with steam traction as they cannot afford to have the caprotti 5 re-tired.
The track is on the verge of being condemed as there are quite afew streches of rotten sleepers and the speed limit has been droped to 10mph.
now the ecclebourne valley railway is on the brink of opening it 8 mile line which is loosing the MRC volenteers and revenue, the future isn't bright.
The railways manager has a few months ago 'jumped ship' and the group is now run by a committee leaving the group in a mess.
so the future of the site is up in the air. they are tying to get it back on its feet but knowbody can fail to ignor the falling number of visitors to the site.
Fingers crossed somthing can be done!

pop up there sometime and tell them that, i'm sure they'll introduce you to the underside of a Deltic!!
I know someone, quite up for SG diesel traction, who did tell them, he got mentioned at their AGM.
