Single occilating cylinder loco?

Post by LnBmad » Thu Dec 26, 2013 10:30 pm

Has anyone got a loco running from a single occilating cylinder? I have a project in mind that this might be the solution for if they can work?
If it can be made full scale it can be made 16mm

Can I get a link to the vid please dan?

Also any chance you could send me some photos of the cylinder, particularly how it's plumbed in and the reverser :) if I can get my head around a single occilating cylinder then I might manage the small loco I wanted :)

I made a few videos so i will just post the links. As for gearing and reverse there isnt one, this was my first loco built back when I was 16. It uses a single mamod cylinder direct drive.

Thanks for this dan! Is the drive direct from cylinder to the axel? Did you need a flywheel?

It is direct drive from the cylinder to axle. A fly wheel is not needed as the forward momentum of the engine creates the flywheel effect. I can get you some more pictures of the engine if you like.

I'm guessing it's not the sort of thing you're thinking of, but my single-cylindered geared Regner Konrad is fantastic. OK, it looks a little odd (Vincent is slightly more conventional), but it's powerful, contolable and runs beautifully. If anything I plan to make mine look odder - big headlamps (from my Accy Baldwin), a Swift Sixteen cowcatcher, buckets and re-railing jacks, etc etc...

Andrew.

I'm planning a model of Louisa but trying to get the efficiency required has been proving tricky... That is until someone suggested a single oscillator between the frames. As the most it will ever be pulling is 5 slate wagons it should run fine.

Sorry to be dim, but what (who?) is Louisa? I'm intrigued...

I must say my Regner Vincent is probably the best suited loco to my line. Slow running - not afraid of tight curves and powerful enough to cope with everything I throw at it

This is Louisa:

She is miniature in comparison to other quarry hunslets. Scaled down she's about 120mm long!

Best of luck with Louisa. If you can find any reference to John Foulds's loco they might help with your project - he built quarry Hunslets in 16mm scale driven by a single cylinder oscillator.

Here are a couple more videos of single cylinder oscillator locos:

A vertical boilered DeWinton like loco, 3/8th bore double acting cylinder with meccano gears.

and

Another vertical boiler, this time a Sentinel like loco using a single acting cylinder with gears bought from a 16mm Association second hand stall.
