Toy Trains of Wales

Post by SapperAnt » Tue Jun 25, 2013 5:20 pm

A guide to Towyn and southern North Wales dated 1936 has recently popped into my possesion (via my work in a charity shop).

It lists all the rail infrastructure and all the tourist hot spots including various circular walks and rail journeys, one of which involves the GWR and Festioniog Railways and another the Tal y Llyn and a GWR motorbus.

The Festiniog, Tal y Llyn and the Vale of Rheiddol are all described and photographed "at work". All three are marketed as "Toy Trains"

The most picturesque and tourist friendly was considered to be the VoR and the best seat on the trip to Devil's Bridge was on the left of the carriage, facing away from the engine. Apparently it was also quicker to walk from Towyn to Tal y Llyn lake than take the train!!

Yes, old tourist books can be really interesting.
I've got one from the similar period called Criccieth & North Wales where it says...'the hideous railway bridge at Brynfelin and the track itself should never have been sanctioned' !
