Electric loco kit

Post by Busted Bricks » Thu Feb 28, 2013 1:27 am

If you head over to my blog there are a couple of pictures of my planned electric loco. It's trundling along on a small circle of plastic track in our living room as I write this.

Too big an investment for my little business I'm afraid.

Sold! I'll buy one! (If it's available in 45mm, at least)

Here is the loco. The loco body kit simply plops onto the electric chassis that I already sell. The loco has perspex glazing, alu mesh grill and ply roof and window frames. The body kit will cost £11 so a complete electric loco will be £26.75 incl. VAT. I start manufacturing kits and writing instructions this week. There are a few things I need to order but hopefully that will arrive before the weekend.

I hope we get some warmer weather soon so I can get one painted.

I like the look of the body kit - I will get one when these are available. Thank you.

It will look a lot better with some paint on it but I can't spray paint when it's this cold.

You are definitely one among many in this respect :(

Are you making this loco in 32 gauge only?

The electric chassis will be available in 45mm gauge. However this loco is fairly narrow so the axleboxes would stick out beyond the buffer beams and I don't think it would look very good. Better suited to an inside framed chassis for 45mm but I don't have one of those planned at the moment.

Who said garden railways are too expensive? Cheap as chips. Looking forward to the arrival of my wagon kits.

I assume you haven't taken a stand at Peterborough?

No, I don't think I have enough of a range of kits for that.

I'm still thinking of whether I should do a 7/8ths version or not. So far most modellers in that scale are very scale/realism consicious but I think there might be a place for simple, affordable kits. Price of course will go up as the size increases. Bigger wheels and stronger motor will be needed. However there will be loads of room for chain driven 4wd and R/C equipment if that takes your fancy.

The full size builders had the same problem when building locos for different gauges.

This photo in Wikipedia shows the Ruston-Hornsby solution for gauges greater than 2'.
