Question....

A very popular starting point for Live Steam. With their low cost comes a number of problems which can be discussed here

I've sussed it! Its not exactly brilliant but its a good option if you don't fancy drilling more holes in your loco...

There's a gap between the smokebox and the burner box area just wide enough to slide a piece of thin copper pipe through... So what I've done is bend a piece of copper pipe with a 90 degree bend in it and push it through the gap and then pushing it so it sits just above the other cylinder. The other side where the modification is has the copper pipe bent around the pipe with the wire in it to form a loop and as the wire only forces the pipe outwards it acts as a shepherds stick and stops it from moving outwards.

I'd post pics but I'm not sure how...

I have attempted to attach it to a reversing lever to find that the wire I'm using likes to bend sideways when trying to put it in forward, yet works fine in reverse! I've taken the wire off for now to re evaluate the situation... but on the plus side, it now has a rather nice little dummy reverser in the cab!

Any ideas?

You could use a spring to push in to forwards but you'll need a locking mechanism to hold it in gear.

I know I shouldn't be posting on Christmas day but...

As I found out the hard way... I'd say avoid using a wire as it has too much side play. I've opted for a bell crank arrangement which could possibly allow for it to be made RC...

the Bell crank sounds good but pictures would be hands. How can we help you to post pictures?

Go over to the Mamod site :

I have posted an article about how to fit R/C to a Mamod and show the bell crank that I made to cotrol F/R on the engine.

Merlin supplied a bell crank arrangement for controlling the regulator using r/c although it could be easily used to put the forward/reverse control into the cab using a lever and quadrant arrangement like an Accucraft. Merlin produced this set up for the Mamod back in the 1980's. I got hold of one and fitted it to a Mamodification called "Ronald".

I can scan and upload the Merlin instructions if there is any interest?

I would be interested in seeing the instructions. It would be helpful to me to use them as some form of guidance when I get round to finishing it... got the lever and first bit not made the crank... yet.
