A very popular starting point for Live Steam. With their low cost comes a number of problems which can be discussed here

Still pretty common to be fair I would say, depends. Maybe worth a smidge more than a run one but there were loads of the kit built ones around.

It does mean something.
That's not in super pristine form. Someone's had the wheels off and replaced them for a 1989 Jubiliee liveried SL Mamod I'd say. SLKs came with the uniform bright red of SL1,2 and 3s.

confirmed as purple :?
but led to believe that the loco was owned from new.
Odd, but I suppose it's not too far fetched to think that a mix up may have happened when new, especially with mamod!
Perhaps the wheels would be worth something then...

If this had come into my works, as a 'standard Mamod' and I was looking to resell as/is, I'd be seeing an unmodifed SL1K and asking max £100-110.
However, as it's boxed, brand new, unsteamed, with the right person looking to 'collect' it, I'd try and angle say £135+ for it.

Shouldn't the roof be fixed on with nuts & bolts rather than rivets for an SLK?

Ask him to run his finger along the underside of the boiler.
I once new a model collector who had a Mamod SL1 who swore that it was pristine, unrun and therefore worth a lot of money, I remember his face becoming particually horrified when I ran my finger under the boiler and it came out black.
A steam propelled life-style.

That's a very good point Pauly. Especially as I see a tablets burner tray in there...
