Bix burner

I have just received a bix gas burner from forest classics (also available from dream steam)

It is very well made with solid copper tube from the gas tank to burner. A foolproof unit and easy to fit (just 3 screws). The instructions are excellent and very clear and easy to follow with simple pictures also included was a gas can adaptor for easy filling. If it wasn't dark and raining it would be running now!

The funny bit about the paperwork is the Safety instructions While its true that a steam engine is a steam engine no matter what it powers guidance such as "Always ensure the gas is turned off immediately after use . LPG gas is heavier than air and will collect in the bottom of your boat." is an interesting idea for a mamod.

Given that we seem to have had enough rain in Hampshire recently to make Queensland look parched fitting a hull might have been a good idea...

I fitted one of these burners to my 1981 or 82 vintage Mamod, not without some difficulty. I've had to reduce the width of the frame spacer on the burner body, and with the gas tank sitting on the footplate significantly alter the pipe from the burner to get it to fit.

Now its in it is very effective. It replaced an old Merlin gas conversion, which was fine (the burner was very efficient) but the gas tank lacked capacity. (I also fitted a Merlin radio control kit back in the 1980's which I've partially replaced with two micro servos intended for electric aircraft driving the reverser and the regulator on a new boiler - batteries and Rx in an "England" style tender).

Mine went in with no problem whatever. Maybe they have improved the design.

My Merlin burner is not burning anywhere near evenly do you have any ideas on how to fettle it?

Before I took my Merlin burner out I steamed the engine for the first time in around 18 years, and the burner worked perfectly.

Is the mesh bent, or uneven?

It was but I have sorted it out but it still burns badly
