Good to see how things are progressing on both projects. I was wondering.

Hi Rik,

I have been heavily distracted with a 7mm layout I have, called The Yard, featuring radio controlled gantry crane and lorries, with standard and narrow gauge track. I had a show in April and May and had decided since the NEC show last November to build a new five foot long factory back drop to the layout, this took a long time to build. I also need to get it done for a railway Modeller photoshoot of the layout.

Hoping now to get on with the garden line (Wilmington Light Railway) and this layout.

Sounds very interesting. Have you posted a video anywhere?

Nothing of any note posted as video, but it is an intention this year to do a "day's working' type video.

It does appear in quite a few exhibition videos, for example this one at Chatham 2024 it appears at 6:55 in.

This photo shows the new factory backdrop, which still needs a bit more work detailing, hoping to get that done over the next couple of months.

The I-beam on top of it is such a nice touch, looks just like the ones holding up the building where I work. How is that effect achieved, foam or wood? I take it that's not an actual steel beam suspended over your layout... :D

This is the protection feature against people putting their heads too far into the layout.
It might also give an acoustig indication for every "touch"....

The beam is made from 6mm MDF, sprayed with Halfords red primer. The lettering I laser cut stencils for and sprayed in white primer.
Underneath the beam are three strips of LEDs that light up the layout.

Joystick control?
Would that be for the road vehicles, by any chance?

Or for the crane? Or both?
(I'm cheating a bit, have heard much discussion of this layout on the Model Rail Radio podcast  )

The joysticks are on the handset for the gantry crane radio control. The handset is just resting there waiting for the show to open.
The three lorries all have their own RC handsets, we will eventually build custom handsets for the lorries as well, we have most of the parts in stock.

Sadly the MRR podcast seems to be no more, I think Tom’s interests have gone in other directions, fun while it lasted.
