Colour match!

Post by Dr. Bond of the DVLR » Tue Jul 21, 2009 10:37 am

I am going to repaint my millie to a more regionally correct colour, GER ultramareine blue. I know that precision paints produce this colour but have been told that their paints are very thin and fiddly to apply. Does anyone know where I can get an easy to apply spray type paint that is close to GER blue? I have enclosed a picture of the colour I am thinking of

You could try using railmatch spray paint, it's what I used for my Caradoc's dome and boiler bands and seemed pretty easy to use, I would of thought that they would do a Great Eastern Blue. Otherwise look round the car shops like halfords for spray paint which looks to be a close match.

rail match? Where is that sold? and also is it heat and flame proof as I need to repaint the black boiler on Millie (never understood why they left it black). I will paint only the top third as of course it is a pot boiler and the paint would probably bubble and flake off on the bottom part!

if you phone RH and ask they will tell you where you can get the paint they use, the boiler is painted black because its a potboiler and any other colour would show soot and discolourisation

Railmatch is sold by most of the model railway shops where I live, indeed I can't find phoenix anywhere in the Morecambe area. You could try putting railmatch into google, or Howes Models, which is the company that makes it. Like Pauly, I think you are best keeping the boiler black, as any spray paint that you can buy will not be resistent to the heat of being close to the burner, whilst it should be ok on the side tanks

rail match don't seem to have GER Blue, I shall contact Roundhouse and see what they think!. I am shore however that I have seen many a pot boiler with coloured boilers, The bottom part would remain black as it is subject to flame and heat but looking at the shiny black b my millie I can't see or wipe off any soot or discolouration

I'm afraid I've never seen a pot boiler with a colour other then black, including modified millies

Hee hee, don't worry! So I shall phone roundhouse tomorrow when I also phone work experience and enquire, what may end up happening is I just get them to paint it as they do such a good job and their blue isn't bad, not perfect but not bad!

Right then, Halfords, as recomended by round house, is what I shall use! What do you think of this colour??#
http://www.steelsecuritydoors.co.uk/ASL ... 2large.png
It is a prety close colour match to the GER loco picture at NRM!
It is cobalt blue 5013 if anyone was wondering. They did do an ultramariene blue but it was far too bright! Just so you know what I'm talking about here is the other colour

Comparing this colour to the picture of the loco it is just too light!

Getting the right color is difficult. How the color looks is dependent on lighting conditions. See pic of my Taliesin wich is partly in the sun.

More pic see this :http://gardenrails.myfreeforum.org/ftopic1079-0.php

I got the paint mixed today from Halfords, it was not exactly the same colour but mercaeds cobalt blau 5513 , it cost 12 pounds and is in spray can form, the colour looked a bit lighter than what I expected (I first looked in a book of samples) but we'll see when It comes to painting the metal!
