Mamod SL1 boiler end
Hello,
I am a newbie to Garden Railways, having acquired a load of 45mm stock from my club as a going concern.
I have, however owned a few Mamods in my time...
I have recently bought an SL1 locomotive that I'm going to convert to 45mm, but I have noticed that the sight glass was all fogged up. On removal and inspection it appears that there is a rubber diaphragm (or is it black sealant ?) on the back of the boiler with a hole in it. Is this right, or has the previous owner bodges it by sealing it?
What should the rear of the boiler look like after the sight glass keeper plate has been removed?
Any help would be much appreciated, as I fear that I may have purchased a lemon!
Thanks,
Tim

Hello Tim and
. I unfortunately can't help you I'am afraid, but I would have thought that the sight glass would have a rubber seal. You can get all sorts of different sizes of seals in most online sites that sell spares for steam locos and even other sites that use water sight glasses. There is a group on here though that have LGB stuff and they would more be more than willing to help I'am sure.
Good luck in you journey into 16mm garden railways, it's a fantastic hobby of ours and it gets more and more enjoyable or frustrating depending on your thinking....

Take a look at the Mamod spare parts and you will figure out.
https://mamodspares.com/spares-14-c.asp
Between the sight glass and boiler there should be a gasket.
And there should be a slot in the boiler looking like the gasket.

Thanks both!
I was wondering why it doesn't look like any of the spares, so from that I think we can safely say that someone has covered the space between the boiler and the sight glass with either a piece of rubber or filled it with black sealant and poked a slit in it...
Looks like I have bought a lemon... She doesn't want to steam either. Pressure is just getting lost from somewhere and running lasts literally a couple of seconds.
Much work to be done to this one. It May well be eligible to be modified, or become an expensive source of spares! I will post a picture of the boiler back end shortly.
Thanks,
Tim

As you can see...
Not very nice and doesn't look right to me.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Tim

Re: Mamod SL1 boiler end
So, after watching the football (sigh). I decided to cheer myself up by going to the workshop and look again at the boiler... Looks like Mr Bodger from Bodgerton was the previous owner. I found half a tonne of black mastik in there along with a piece of metal...
No idea what Mr Bodger's thought process was other than not wanting to spend around a fiver on a new gasket.
Hey ho, at least I can give this loco a fighting chance now...
