Battery powered loco survey
Battery powered loco survey
To lend weight to a 'discussion' I am having on another forum, could you complete a little survey so I can gather some real data?
I've created it with Google Forms which might require you to log in via your Google account but rest assured no personal data will be accumulated (by me - though I can't couch for Google)

Re: Battery powered loco survey
Basically, he is anti battery RC and pro track powered DCC. Among other things, he is insisting that you need one charger per loco so that during a running session you can recharge all your locos at the same time when they run out of juice. I (and others) insist you only need one charger for all your locos. He also insists that DCC works out to be cheaper than battery RC ... and .... and ...

I would recommend that you cease engaging with that person, he is notorious for that and other arguments on various forums (in fact he has been banned from Large Scale Central because of his argumentative attitude).
He has been arguing that track powered DCC is superior to batteries from well before I started in G scale over 10 years ago.
I think he considers himself the font of all knowledge when it comes to DCC and battery power.
I have seen him in action on 3 forums and just hope he does not discover this one.
My personal feeling is that you will just be wasting your time engaging with him.

Re: Battery powered loco survey
My advice is the same as GAP's.
The following relevant quote is usually attributed to Mark Twain.........
"Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."
It goes back a lot further though. There is something similar in the Bible (Proverbs 26:4) and it may well have first appeared in cuneiform on a clay tablet.

Re: Battery powered loco survey
I started reading that link before I read Graeme and Graeme's (!!) comments. I say 'started' because I gave up reading it well before halfway, so those two responses simply confirmed what I was already thinking. The guy likes the sound of his own voice waaaay too much, and as the old saying goes, "Empty vessels make the most noise".
Up to you of course, but I think you could make much better use of your time than on a debate that you can never win, even though you are almost certainly right.

Re: Battery powered loco survey
Thanks for the warnings folks - I do know of his track record and be have clashed horns previously. He seems to enjoy using capital letters and emboldened text in his replies and in his last reply to me even included enlarged text.
In a previous post he asked for comments on his web page - and even invited criticism. I've not criticised, I have merely pointed out a couple of inconsistencies. He has grudgingly accepted he needs to change the wording of one statement (about the need for one charger per loco) - but only the clarify the point he is making rather than accept that the statement has no real basis in truth.
I've now had 116 responses to my little survey so I will try to present my viewpoint using stats to back it up. Any prediction as to how he will respond?
When I was a lecturer, we encouraged students to challenge the views of others - even accepted authorities on subjects. I see this as a purely academic exercise.

Thats a huge response from our esteemed members!
I'm sure we would all be fascinated to see a summary of the results when you have the time.

Re: Battery powered loco survey
Now up to 175 responses which is far more than I was expecting. I might close the survey down tomorrow and then do a more detailed analysis - if I can remember how to do correlations ....
Since posting a summary of the results on the other forum my friend hasn't responded - though I have heard he's bad mouthing me and my guide on a different forum.

Re: Battery powered loco survey
From past experience he will ridicule the survey, produce all sorts of links and then just cut the discussion off.ge_rik wrote: ↑Sun May 01, 2022 8:46 am Thanks for the warnings folks - I do know of his track record and be have clashed horns previously. Thankfully, our membership here is generally more helpful and tolerant of each others foibles.

Re: Battery powered loco survey
Are you saying I have foibles!!??? - how dare you..........
I have never been so insulted in my life .....
Well not since Friday ....
Rik
PS At first I enlarged and emboldened "How dare you...." but it just didn't look right on a forum post. I don't think it's something I could ever do, no matter how much a post has annoyed me.
PPS It does seem that some people on forums take comments as personal insults - they insist on playing the man rather than the ball. I go walking with four other old gits like me and I often quite heatedly disagree with the political views of one of our group - but it's only his views I have problems with - especially after he pays for my coffee and toasted tea cake.....
Re: Battery powered loco survey
I've now created a follow-up survey on battery power. The first was to address a specific point - this one is far more generalised. Before I post it more widely, could you take a quick look and let me know if
https://forms.gle/MKpzpRobhAqc5ppr9
Thanks
Rik
- you spot any errors, typos, etc.
- any of the questions are ambiguous or difficult to answer
- any questions should be removed
- there are questions you think are missing
- you have any other observations

Thanks
Rik
Re: Battery powered loco survey
I've just filled it in Rik. Written half a dozen clarification comments at various points ( you may disagree, in which case I shall be mortaly offended, throw my toys out of the pram and never speak to you again! ) , but in general I think it's pretty comprehensive.
