My build thread of the Kerr Stuart Brazil my first real Loco
Re: My build thread of the Kerr Stuart Brazil my first real Loco
Nice to see another person building a Brazil. Started building my one several years ago, and it's getting there now - helped that a local member build the boiler for me and had a spare saddle tank.

Re: My build thread of the Kerr Stuart Brazil my first real Loco
It's been a while life gets in the way of hobbies sometimes.
Since I became more involved in the 16mm association and built a lot more rolling stock and a couple of small diesals for our Railway, unfortunatly the little Brazil got shelved but i recently dug her out and re- commenced work on her.
So here are some pics of progress the last couple of weeks. Whilst it rained and blew a gale outside work continued in my little work shop
I felt that the small bush's needed altering for the axles she was looking very plain on the chassis sides, so I decided some mock horn blocks were needed, I do think she is starting to look a bit like a loco now

Looking good and those wheels are a lovely bit of work did you machine them yourself?

Hi Tom
Yes I did actually a first for me too to get four things the same size on my little lathe
Here is a picture from a couple of weeks ago the wheel blanks are behind the pony set.

Your metal and copper work look excellent, this should be a high quality build when finished.
The extra weight in that pony truck should stop it dancing around as many do.

Only just stumbled on this thread... (don't know why, but expected things like this in "Locomotives - Live Steam" section?)
Very enjoyable
Thank you for sharing.

I agree. It is these loco-building threads that I look forward to the most. My level of "modelling" is to assemble kits and glue bits of wood together. I was very pleased with myself for assembling a Roundhouse locomotive and modifying it slightly.
Modelling on this level- actually making a steam loco from pieces of metal- is fascinating. It's exciting to imagine I could maybe try it one day.

Thank you for your kind comments guys.
I uploaded some pics of the little bits I have started to make now, in the first picture you can see one of the lumps of raw steel I picked out of the scrap pile before it disappeared to the scrap dealer and its partners transition into the clevis's for the valve rods, its a real learning curve but most of the machine work was done by eye they still need file finishing yet but i,m relatively pleased so far, I,m copying some pictures from the internet to get the shape.
The important hole position and size was measured but the rest in the picture below is file work so far.
I,m finding this work pretty therapeutic but steel is so much harder to work than silver☺
I will post some more pics when they are finished.

Re: My build thread of the Kerr Stuart Brazil my first real Loco
Done a little more finally closed the boiler up and finshed the smoke box shell, After pressure testing the boiler I decided to paint both the boiler and the smokebox with cylinder head paint which i fired off in the kiln for an hour at 200c
I am starting to feel like i am getting there slowly
Thank you for your comments everybody
