Tom's station building

Evening all,

A while back Tom was kind enough to say some positive things about the WHR station building I was working on for my line, so I offered to make something similar for him as a thank you for the work he'd done on my Russell. I've made a start on that, and Tom suggested I write it up for the Forum, so here goes...

It's another project with 5mm PVC foam board,which I've discovered I really enjoy working with, and ready-to-run (??!) Jackson #miniatures type dolls house windows. Here's the basic shell taking shape a few weeks ago:

The back's plain, because it'll be against the fence on Tom's line.

If you're thinking it looks familiar, it's probably because you had a train set in the 80s...




Not a direct copy - but I am tempted to spray the finished thing bright yellow!

I hope to get some more done this week...

Although I never expected anything in return for helping Andrew isn't this a great example of the barter system!

The building reminds me of the Hornby model Andrew mentions which I had a couple of as a kid on my OO gauge railway.

Please don't paint it yellow!

Andrew's one looks much nicer than the Hornby one! I'm always amazed at what can be done in larger scales using foam-board and plasticard and similar stuff. The building already looks somewhat real, because of its pleasing proportions. It ought to look very nice on your little railway, Tom.

My wife's away this weekend, so the kitchen table's covered in tools, materials and half-finished models, and the air stinks of glue - it's a glimpse of the chaos I'd live in if I wasn't married. The upside of all this chaos is that I'm getting some modelling done - starting with Tom's building.

Yesterday evening I added some more details and the moulded cladding, and this morning I made a few tweaks to the roof, oh, and added a door knob - we're getting there:

It's getting increasingly difficult to avoid breaking open this can of spray paint though...

Don't worry Tom, only kidding, I got that ages ago for another project... Actually I think painting's going to be a while off yet. There's not much more to do, just the roof and a little tidying up, but painting will have to wait for better weather.

More modelling coming up, might move on to the chocolate factory Sentinel now...

I absolutely agree with that, it is a lovely structure with great character.

How have you done the shiplap cladding?

I cheated! It's moulded sheet, I purchased it from Glendale Junction who very helpfully cut the sheet in half for me to keep postage costs down. They don't do online shopping as such, saying they prefer to speak to customers - and their customer care is very good. The sheet's very thin and easy to work with - I "Butlered" it with course sandpaper to give some grain texture...

If I did it would be for my benefit, not the kids! They asked why I was taking pictures of a spray can this morning - they were pretty confused when I told them it was a joke, and even more so when I tried to explain it to them...

I'll see how I get on, and what the weather does, I rather like the painting part of things (it brings out the characyer...), so I'll keep hold of it for now- unless you've got a burning desire to paint it Tom?

I really love the little station Andrew, the colour at the moment looks good enough or something similar, but yellow is what we all want to see.

Love the veranda work on the roof, are you going to put a light in it. Also mate what did you use for the doorknob, or did you buy it.

I have used large domed rivets for door knobs, they can be chemically blackened!

The doorknob on this one's a pin pinched from the sewing drawer. There's a name for them I think, but I've forgotten what it it...

No, no plans to add lighting Rod, I wouldn't inflict my electrics on Tom! The roof will be removable though, so the inside could be detailed and illuminated at a later date.

Very sharp looking station building. Any more progress on it since the last post? (Forgive me but I am just very curious to the end result )
