I'd fire it - that is what they were built for. The SL1 is by far the better looking of the two.

Yes I think I will fire it. It may be better looking, but I don't think it will run as well as the MK3. But then thats only to be expected. Hard to believe its nearly four decades between them.

I also think the SL1 looks so much better over the MK3 version. Mamod needed to just correct the poor quality issues with the original set up and leave the cosmetics alone. To me the MK3 is just plain ugly. Great looking SL1 though, love the green ones

I'm not familiar with the variations of the Mamod, but I prefer the green one.

SL1 is by far the more aesthetically pleasing but the MK3 is what the spec should have been - o ringed piston heads, lubricator, copper boiler, gas firing etc...

There is a definite charm to the SL1 and loads of things can be done to make it run sweeter. Mamods later offerings might be more refined but they appear to have had a tickle from the ugly stick. Nice colour though on yours.

Elsewhere someone asked if anyone got an urge for a Mamod Traction Engine. Well I used to get urges for an SL1. There's just something endearing about them.

'tickle from the ugly stick...' - sound thrashing, more like! That said, there are worse. I guess the SL1 needed work on the mechanics, and the Mk. 3 on the aesthetics. It keeps the Mamod-wranglers busy. ;)

Traffic Pattern? What pattern? Spuds out; grain in, but cattle, sheep and passengers are a lot less predictable.
