Sounds like you guys are in general agreement and this is exactly the way I have been looking at it. Obviously the only way to do a proper restoration would be to get it under cover and strip it to the frame for repairs, like a chassis-up car restoration. Equally obviously I don't have these facilit...

Haven't steamed much this summer unfortunately, always seem to have too much else to do and I'm not really one to be out in the cold in the winter. I especially hate those months when everything is always wet. My main priority during the winter is to actually finish some rolling stock, I'm terrible ...

Thanks Steamie, I had no idea such a company existed. Might be worth an enquiry but I suspect the cost would be pretty prohibitive for a pensioner - even with a decent pension ! I see they can help with spare parts so it would certainly be worth asking if they could help with some fittings like grab...

Zach, thank you, yes very similar. One of the things that first made me think it was GE was the styling of panelling/beading being very similar to the photos I'd found online, though the GE seems to have had an enormous variety of detailed differences even between coaches of the same basic class. I ...

Great Eastern brake third no515

In response to overwhelming public demand elsewhere on the forum here is the first episode in an occasional series about my first attempt at garden railways before I realised I would have to change to a more practical scale. My first item of rolling stock : http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm225/m...

Sorry if my post seems to have hijacked your thread, hope you're not offended To be honest I wasn't quite sure what you were getting at with your original question. As someone else said I think the only factor is that it is a railway in the garden. I don't think track width is relevant. If I could g...

"No wheel, broken, compost heap"? :) How rude, that's my home you're talking about ;) Seriously, it's not actually as bad as it looks, apart from the doors, and it looks a lot better than that now since I started doing some restoration work on it. It's a Great Eastern brake third and I ha...

I'd love to see something REALLY BIG You want REALLY big ? Then let's not muck about with this tiddly stuff. How about 12in scale on 1435mm track, at least it would be if I could get some track and a couple of pairs of wheels. Well it is a carriage and it is in the garden so surely it counts . . . ...

Those will do the job. I've got a set exactly the same, though they came from Trackshack, and they seem to fit anything on an Accucraft loco. The commonest size of nut/ screw eg the buffer beam screws are 3mm, the smaller ones 2mm. You just beat me to it, Chris !

When I built my L & B style Ragleth I used DJB rub down transfers which are pretty much identical to the ones on the Accucraft Lew. Not sure if DJB still do them. http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm225/mollusc99/Garden%20Railway/P1020500.jpg GRS also do water slide transfers http://www.grsuk.c...

How do you tell the difference between an English Police Officer, a Canadian Police Officer, an American Police Officer and a Scottish police officer? QUESTION: You're on duty by yourself (don't ask why, you just are, and your Sergeant hates you) walking on a deserted street late at night. Suddenly,...

Well done, Andrew, you've mastered technology ! They may be short but it's always worth seeing what others are doing in their gardens - at least of a railway related nature ! Every little helps when, like me, things are going slowly with your own line and you're looking for ideas and inspiration. Br...

Likewise. I gave up trying to use an iron for anything except wiring. I use a small Iroda butane blowtorch for bigger stuff, it works like magic - plenty of heat exactly where you want it. A joint like you want to make would take two seconds.
