Re: Need gearbox advise
Interesting Peter. However the architecture of the chassis I am using would probably preclude that layout. Not averse to bevel gears but I am looking for a vertical motor mount and a very positive locating of the gears in relation to each other, i.e. within a yolk with bearings pressed in for the ax...

Need gearbox advise
I am looking for a suitable gearbox/transmission for a 16 mm scale 0-4-0 diesel loco. I already have the chassis and wheel sets There is 38 mm space available between the wheel backs and insulating bushes. It must accept an 1/8th inch axle and use metal gears preferably, worm and pinion type. I have...

Modern Darjeeling, DHR, coach information
I have just bought 3 of Peter Yatton's rather fine modern DHR coach kits. Little problem - It does not matter what search parameters I use I cannot find any useful pictorial information to nail down suitable exterior naming and numbering. Loads on pictures of all the loco's out there but collectivel...

Re: Lynton & Barnstaple measured and drawn book Stephen Phil
This book is a labour of love and a work of art. My favorite railway title that I have a compulsion to dip into every now and then. I won mine in a raffle after the chance purchase of a £1 ticket at the Warley NEC show. It was around the date of its publication and after having been button holed by ...

Re: Snowdon mountain railway - rack and pinion in garden form?
You may well need to incline your locomotive's boiler to take account of the gradient on your proposed rack line - dependent on where the take off of steam produced in the boiler is located on the back head. There is a risk that water in the boiler will cover this outlet rather than steam from the t...

Re: Flexible track
Interesting debate on the efficacy of rail benders. I've never used one. I did consider buying a rail bender when I started out in the hobby but was advised by one of the staff at GRS that they weren't really necessary Strange thing, some 13 years ago when buying some additional flexi' for my line,...

Re: Flexible track
Twin rail benders may appear pricey but when you put them in the context of how much you can be spending on just building the basic infrastructure of your railway, the time they save and the possibilities for layout optimization they offer it's a small cost. Add in the cost of your stock and "s...

Re: Flexible track
Accucraft is a good brand. Code 332 so compatible with most other makes of that type. E.G. LGB, Bachmann, Trainline, Piko, etc'. So plenty of set track points and crossings available without the need to make or commission your own. Agree with all previous remarks. Get or rent a track/rail bender. Av...

Re: 16mm scale brick size
So you've got rivet counters for the locos and the rolling stock. Now we have a category for "brick counters". And not just the number but the size and source as well ! Somebody had to say it :D My inner rivet counter has now found an additional cause. Very informative and QI. I live in a ...

Re: IP Coach Kits
I have built a few of IP's kits, mostly from their Darjeeling range and all of laser cut plywood construction. They fit together well and are generally well thought out. However, they tend to be of a light construction and benefit from adding a bit of weight low down. This feature can give them a ra...

Re: Roundhouse
They changed over the r/c kit as supplied on my Darj' when I could not get on with "car" wheel and trigger RX rather than the usual "aircraft" twin stick type - at no cost and no quibble. Great company, every garden railway, and those who run indoors, should be home to one of the...

Re: Will the Welsh railways close due to weather?
I have found the Snowdon Mountain Railway a bit of a disappointment in the customer service dept' in the past. Seemingly more a profit generating tourist trap rather than an enthusiast led/inspired enterprise. The year before they brought in the bookable steam services I visited - Asked when the nex...

Re: Glue
Evode's "Seriously Strong Glue". Available from most hardware shops. It's a clear silicon based product. I use it all the time. Also great for fixing figures and items to locos and stock that you may want to remove at some time in the future with little risk of damaging painted surfaces. N...

Re: 16mm and its relationship with other scales
One of the biggest problems with the larger scales, like 16 mm, is trying to convey the feel of their appeal in the garden environment in a show setting. Smaller scales can be built into compact, detailed and prototypical portable senic layouts that tell a story with reletive ease. If there were a w...

Re: 16mm and its relationship with other scales
Mmmm simple for some, but it’s not showing the scale difference (shall I say size too). A 16 mm scale model is around 2/3rd the size of an equivalent 7/8"ths scale one - 1:19.3 v 1:13.9 respectively. Whether you can run your 2ft gauge prototype scaled at 7/8"th inch to the foot ...

Re: 16mm and its relationship with other scales
I still can’t get my head around 7/8th’s, I know someone showed me a photo for comparison, but does it only run on 45mm track or can it run on 32mm has well. I think it was Derek (bazzer42) or maybe not. It is supposed to represent 2 ft gauge prototypes, scaled around 1:13.7 (7/8th" ...

Re: My Old Car…is now a TV STAR
Very smart. Why is it as soon as I look at a picture of that Granada type I immediately hear the signature tune from the Sweeney and Inspector Regan shouting "Nick 'im" at Carter. Now who on here would have had a Jag' Mk II for it to chase through a pile of strategically placed large cardb...

Re: 16mm and its relationship with other scales
I have no idea if other modellers disparage 16mm scale - and to be honest it doesn't bother me in the slightest if they do. I know how much enjoyment I get out of my garden railway modelling. Rik Same for me Rik, I watched youtube videos and saw them running with smoke puffing out and the diesels w...
