Sanding and Varnish for Wood
I am scratch building some 7/8ths scale coach bodies in basswood, what grade of sand paper would others suggest I use before varnishing and what varnish would others suggest for coaches that have a wood varnish finish. Wood and I are most definitely not best friends and its normally a material I wou...

Version 2 up and running.. https://i.postimg.cc/8cv2GmH5/20210706-141119.jpg Sat next to verion 1. I've lengthened it a little and moved the wheels apart too, I felt they were a little close. There are now tabs in the main bed to help locate the solebars, not a tight fit, but help when you glue. An...

Re: Dedicated to the over committed projects/under producers
I always find nice sweeping curves pleasing to the eye.
What you now need is a regulator, I find they are quite good at picking up cables and dragging them down the line so one should be fine for those weeds if you can get one with enough weight ;-)

Re: Best paint or other medium for real wood
Some Highland Railway wagons I painted using life colour paints, the bodies are resin, I lined the floor with a thin piece of ply to give the real wood and grain effect.

Re: Static points, has anybody created a working set?
On the topic of check rails for crossing, when ever I have built 7mm scale turnout I have always run stock through them with out the check rails first a few times before fitting the check rail, if they don't work reliably with out the check rail I have always work on the basis it will cause problems...

Re: Northfield Tramway
A wee bit a testing for the tram and trailer on a roughly 3% gradient which it shouldn't ever need to tackle on the garden tramway.
Batteries at approx 90% charge
Tram + trailer required 20% power
Tram on it's own struggled on 5%, nae bother on 10%

With the move a garden tramway I find myself in very unfamiliar ground when it comes to what is best to use, this time with track components. This all started with 45mm track for the narrow gauge trams, I decided to go with code 180/200 as I want a fine scale appearance, what I didn't consider was t...

It will be interesting to see the finished article, looking forward to it. Jimmy, I built something similar for my 7mm scale tram storage/fiddle yard, the only difference being the inner loop is narrow gauge and only the outer loop is dual gauge. I am looking forward to building this in the larger ...

Re: Northfield Tramway
After some to and fro'ing I have a design which works, all I need to do now is build the baseboard to build it on.
It was the cleanest design I could come up with with the minimum complications such as switches doubling as check rails.

Re: Northfield Tramway
I decided from the outset that I want to adopt fine scale track and wheels standards, I know its bucking the trend a bit but as I have also opted for battery power their aren't many folk likely to bring their stock along unless I do put power in the track. I am using standard Gauge 1 wheels which ha...

Re: Northfield Tramway
I would worry if I was you, we are half thinking along the same idea (avoided the pun) and my wife says anyone who thinks like me should worry. My Mk5 design was similar to yours but I changed the hand of the dual gauge on the single straight and and put the narrow gauge change over to the inner sid...

Re: Northfield Tramway
The turnout design came about because of the need for dual gauge track with the wider gauge rail on the outside of centre, I considered a number of different options, one not particularly sensible, and even one option with four rails in the single line section, the sketch was the best compromise I c...

Re: Northfield Tramway
A quick sketch of the tramways test track, if trams can run on this they should have no problems in the garden. A friend is knocking up a templot track plan for me so I can start progressing some track, albeit indoors on the test track. David I would have thought the inner radius should be smaller ...

Re: Bending Light/Prisms
My engineering lecturer always said I made life too difficult for myself sometimes with my solutions to problems. A bit annoyed I didn't think of that, I have some of those LED's for the interior, two different colours together would do just the trick, thanks. All I need to do now is put a non-condu...

Bending Light/Prisms
Their are some clever folk on here that do lots of clever things and the www has let me down. What I want to do is put an LED under the floor of a tram and reflect the light from the LED through the dash lamp holder, basically make a periscope for the front and rear light. First idea was file the en...

Re: Northfield Tramway
I hadn't realised these connectors came in such a small size, I had never come across this size before, either. I subsequently discovered that they do a 3-way version which have just been delivered, and other multiples seem to be available. So my thanks to Rik as well. When the 2 pin connectors cam...
