I don't really get the logic as a rare item will sell for a high price no matter when bids are placed if people know about it. Early high bids may deter others from bidding later. In any case many of these locos seem to be bought by a few dealers as you see them on their websites or stalls at shows ...

I've had a number of conversations recently with friends who run 16mm or G scale live steam locos about the large amount of locos recently coming up for sale and the lower sale prices and one theory is that the number of new people running the locos has leveled off with the improved build quality of...

Just from looks I would say go for the Fowler as it is a model of a real loco plus if you want something more different you could make your own side tanks.

If it is an inside frame version these were really marketed for the G scale market, there being a version with a Germanic styled body and therefore the flanges were deeper to work with LGB track.

It's here,

It looks to be in better condition than mine, but then I paid a lot less for it a few years ago.

If you join the various garden rail and 16mm groups on Facebook you will find some interesting articles and stuff come up cheaper for sale.

A pity that the one on eBay seems already to have reached silly money! The 16mm scene now seems to have moved into the collectors market with wealthy collectors and dealers willing to pump up prices, more so for 32mm gauge locos.

Merlin kept the Monarch name throughout their history for their small fixed cylinder saddle tank locos. The photos shown above are Merlin Beck locos and each one that I've seen seems to be slightly different. I have 2 of the Merlin Beck ones (one a box of bits!) and a later Merlin one as in the eBay...

It is just a standard Merlin Monarch, I'm surprised that you have not seen a photo of one before as they were one of their best sellers for quite a few years. They are quite sort after being quite pretty.

LGB / Aster Frank S top-up valve

I'm in discussion with the ebay seller "chinexlady" who makes Goodall type top-up valves to get one made to replace the dome top filler plug, would anyone else be interested in one so that a batch can be made to lower price?

I was tempted too but a scratch built loco that has not been run much makes me wonder why. It also has Hackworth valve gear and the cylinders to not appear to be angled as they should for best performance. In this scale the angle does not matter as the error caused becomes a few thou, not enough to...

I can't say I like your crude top pic but the reality may look better. The safety valve sticking out of the dome bugs me more, why could they have not done the same as Pearse and but in inside the dome with dummy realistic vales on top for the steam to come out. Also as I have said before the outsid...

This is the way that early Accucraft locos used to be set up to run on R/C just the same as Merlin and Pearse locos before them. Once run in they can be just as easy to control as one with a separate regulator. It certainly won't harm the loco.

You can buy brass or bronze bushes, it is best to get the bronze if you use copper tube.

The easiest way is to buy the bushes ready made from a model engineering parts supplier, but they are not that hard to make if you have a lathe.
