Re: Loco nameplates

I've had a look around and decided to go with narrow planet, custom made 8mm high. I'm looking forward to getting them. I've had several sets from Narrow Planet and very happy with them. The only thing is that their delivery time is rather unpredictable because they wait until they have enough orde...

Difficult to see, but the window frames are painted brown.
They look brown enough to me Peter! :D

Re: Building THORNAS - ADDING SOUND

This where the fun started! The Rx65b that I used in this loco is actually one that I took out of something else because I had unsuccesfully tried to change the programming and it appeared to be faulty. However the basic functions still seemed to be ok. To trigger the DF Player I need to send signal...

Re: Building THORNAS - ADDING SOUND

I always had it in the back of my mind to add sound to this loco, but didn't want to do anything until I had it running satisfactorily. So, now that it is, sound was next on the agenda. Commercial soundcards are expensive and relatively bulky and space is at a premium so I decided to take inspiratio...

I agree Rik, although I must admit that it does annoy me when somebody asks a question of the OP on a thread from years ago when the actual OP hasn't logged in for years.

Wallis & Steevens were primarily agricultural machinery and traction engine manufacturers, not railway engine builders, thats probably why you've not come across them before.

So was I right then about the plate on the side being the builder?
Yes.
This link shows a very similar plate. Same wording but rectangular rather than lozenge shape.

Re: Palmerston - Small England Loco as built

How do you join resin to resin? I've been using superglue. Which also glues the resin to filament. I don't like it, but I'm not sure what else to use. So have I. It isn't my favourite either. ... The only other thing I can think of is quick set epoxy. Me too, on all counts. So far ( fingers crossed...

Re: Palmerston - Small England Loco as built

Simon, my picture above is of one of the prints I did in my DeWinton build. I can't speak for Trevor, but my reasoning was the ability (potentially) to produce all of the detail in one go without having to put all the fine detail on individually. This is a one piece print but the underside looks lik...

Re: Palmerston - Small England Loco as built

I'm particularly impressed by the finish on the top of the footplate. If I'm seeing things correctly, the top of the footplate is the underside of the print and has the supports? There appears to be very minimal dimpling from the supports and relatively few visible layer lines - or is that simply be...

did indeed find a book by that name, author Ernest F Carter. There are a few copies for sale online--
EF Carter was a well known author back in the 1950's. I'm sure I inherited a couple of his books from my dad, but no dea where they went to.

Looking good Trevor.
I do envy you your ability to use the 2D drawings in Sketchup, I've tried to do it myself but without any real success. I guess its some sort of knack which I haven't yet found.

Re: Making "steam" from an atomizer for making mist

A year or so ago, there was a series on UK Tv about Hornby ( in its current iteration) and one of the items showed a 00 King ( I think ) loco with a 'real' smoke effect that looked very similar to this. I don't know how they did it though. Many years ago, although I wanted one I never managed to get...

Re: 3D Printed Points

As the project is inside PLA should do the job hopefully, the next thing to do is place all sets in the shed where they are going to be used and expose them to the heat over the summer months. Outside temps will reach into the 30'sC for the next few months, I suppose I should get a cheap thermomete...

Re: Sound cards

I think that further back in this old thread, Steve was asking about where to get appropriate sound files. I've just found out that BBC archive sound effects recordings are available for FREE download for personal use! You can download lots of Steam Train Sound Effects from the BBC Sound Effects web...
