Re: Quarry Hunslet
I've been looking round further, and I think they must definitely be oil cans. I have found a couple of pictures with unpainted cans in the same location and looking at similar shots of other locos, some have oil cans there and some don't, but none seem to be painted in livery. Net result...? I'm go...

Re: Quarry Hunslet
Thanks Drew. Oil cans were my best guess too, but the fact that on this (preserved) loco they were painted to match it, had me wondering, plus that there are smaller definite oil cans sitting in front of them. The spouts ( if thats what they are) seem to be at funny angle too.

Re: Quarry Hunslet
A query, folks. Can anyone tell me what these two blue circular objects are on the footplate just in front of the cab? Painted blue they presumably are part of the loco itself?

Re: Quarry Hunslet
Have done Rod. Please note though that it probably only fits this one variety of motor/gearbox.

In similar vein, I did once meet Rev. Wilbur Awdrey ( Thomas the Tank Engine author). He was showing his Thomas layout at an exhibition that we were also showing at. Nothing remarkable about it, but it continues the Teddy Boston theme. :) Wilbur, of course, was in his own books as "The Thin Cle...

Re: Quarry Hunslet
A couple of weeks ago, Peter Butler posted a writeup of a kit he was building where the manufacturers had provided two plastic jigs to simplify quartering. That gave me an idea  First I used my Sketchup drawing of the loco sideframes and copied the axle holes as a "group" and placed ...

Re: Quarry Hunslet
Thats really neat Philip. Have you made the housing box yourself. It great for protecting the gears from all the rubbish that gets picked up when running the locos. :thumbright: Thanks Rod. Yes, the gearmotor housing is custom drawn & printed. In three parts, the body in two halves glued togeth...

Re: Quarry Hunslet
Thanks Trevor. What resin are you using? That's a can of worms! I started by using up the Sunlu "WaterWashable ABS Like" that I had left from the Watertower that absorbed moisture, if you remember. Working on the basis that the loco would be stored indoors and not run in the rain! That ran...

Re: A Quiet Sunday
I know it's harmless, but Ugh I think the worst insect we have to suffer in the UK (apart from Midges) are Cockchafers (aka May Bug or Doodlebug). Some years ago we had some guests from Mexico staying with us one September. They were terrified when they saw some DaddyLonglegs...thought they were gia...

Re: Quarry Hunslet
Well, as you may have noticed, I've been a bit quiet on this thread for the last couple of weeks. Unfortunately with the weather having improved very slightly I had to do things around the garden, and then whilst walking the dog I managed to slip down an embankment and wrench my right wrist backward...

Re: Yr Hen Felin & Yr Orsaf Newydd
if you look closely at the photo you can make out where I have filled holes, level with half way up the hand rails I have fitted, on the four vertical frame members, Yes, I can see now, sorry. However sometimes there are horizontal handrails at about that position, although normally with full lengt...

Re: Yr Hen Felin & Yr Orsaf Newydd
Thats looking really good, Phil.
Re your earlier comment about 4 handrails, it was pretty normal for there to be vertical handrails both sides of the guards entrance to the veranda. Is that what you were referring to?

Re: The Railway in the Valley of the Mill
When I started to try to draw this out, reality soon set in - there just isn't enough space. Yes, there is, you just have to dig out more of the hillside and build a bigger retaining wall!   Sorry, couldn't resist! Seriously, it looks to be coming on well and yesterday seems ...

Re: Imagine finding this in your back garden
Who in here didn't buy their house because they could get a railway in it.. Well, I must hold my hand up and say "I didn't". In 1997 when I bought this place, I was still firmly modelling in P4 ( 4mm finescale) with a 23ft x 23ft exhibition layout which had been under construction s...

Re: The Great Garden Railway Inspection Reports
Some of you may remember that back last summer, Mr I.N. Spectre's assistant, a French gent by the name of M.DePuty paid a quick visit to Peter B's line and did a report for us. Since his boss is MIA, last week we promoted M. DePuty to being Temporary Acting Big Cheese Inspector of Garden Railways. A...

Re: The (Windmill Hill) Welsh Highland Railway
Rampant campanula was my problem this year. Rampant moss is mine... I'm thinking of starting an export business - using rail transport of course, if I can clear enough of it to allow the trains to run! Oooh, I'm imagining something like the Irish peat lines, maybe with those rustic looking wooden c...
