Part 4: The rollingstock. https://i.imgur.com/r2OelwW.jpg There was only one stop we had to make on the way back to the depot, to have a look at tunnel 2. https://i.imgur.com/MbtF2Jt.jpg Like tunnel 1 the construction is unlined rock, save for some additional steel reinforcement which further reduce...

Re: The Great Garden Railway Inspection Reports
Sorry about the delay in getting the next part up, thanks for being patient! Part 3: The infrastructure I had some time to kill before I would get a chance to inspect the infrastructure later today, so it was a good time to have a wander around the depot area. https://i.imgur.com/Xb5rmXX.jpg A lot ...

Part 2: The Journey My somewhat improvised accommodation proved to be at least satisfactory, and better than the alternatives. I woke up with the magpies and kookaburras singing, and.. the unmistakable screech of flanges? https://i.imgur.com/7aYcge6.jpg I rushed out onto the platform, almost not bel...

Re: The Great Garden Railway Inspection Reports
Thanks for reading so far! Apologies in advance this ended up rather long, part 2 is coming shortly A wonderful set of photos of a forgotten corner of the continent. I too was intrigued by that single slip - something you built yourself? Rik It is a conversion of a simple crossing, the single bladed...

Re: The Great Garden Railway Inspection Reports
Originally I only had three lines that I was planning to visit here in Victoria, but during my inspection of the Cockatoo Creek tramway it came to my attention that there is another operation in the general area. Not a real railway maybe, but a volunteer run heritage tramway. Despite the short noti...

Re: Static points, has anybody created a working set?
So it is important to note that while completely static points do exist in 1:1 scale, they are exceedingly rare and as far as I know not used on any currently operating electric tramway. The vast majority of points on modern systems use a pair of moving blades just the same as heavy rail points. As ...

Re: Static points, has anybody created a working set?
Looks to me as if real modern trams have invented a unique and ingenious way of doing this Single track to double passing point NO moving parts. Which system is this? I've never seen a static set of points on a modern system before and even single bladed are rare in new construction. If you can fin...

Re: Tram Turnouts explained please
There was a recent thread that might be of interest on completely static points, with no moving parts at all. This is definitely an option for what you describe, though involves a bit of building and is pretty unusual in prototype practice. I have seen static points like this used on a horse tramway...

Re: Northfield Tramway
A wee bit a testing for the tram and trailer on a roughly 3% gradient which it shouldn't ever need to tackle on the garden tramway. Batteries at approx 90% charge Tram + trailer required 20% power Tram on it's own struggled on 5%, nae bother on 10% https://youtu.be/B2gFLI3nF48 David That looks grea...

Re: Static points, has anybody created a working set?
There's a bit of a bump in the facing direction because the wheels fall into the hole where the point blade is supposed to be, but you'd fix that if you were building one like this by design. On the 1:1 version above ( admittedly not quite what you want) there can be seen a pad for the flange to ru...

Re: Static points, has anybody created a working set?
Out of curiosity I tried pulling the point blade out of a conventional single bladed set of points, which still works as it turns out. There's a bit of a bump in the facing direction because the wheels fall into the hole where the point blade is supposed to be, but you'd fix that if you were buildin...

Re: Northfield Tramway
I would worry if I was you, we are half thinking along the same idea (avoided the pun) and my wife says anyone who thinks like me should worry. My Mk5 design was similar to yours but I changed the hand of the dual gauge on the single straight and and put the narrow gauge change over to the inner si...

Re: Northfield Tramway
The turnout design came about because of the need for dual gauge track with the wider gauge rail on the outside of centre, I considered a number of different options, one not particularly sensible, and even one option with four rails in the single line section, the sketch was the best compromise I ...

Re: Northfield Tramway
A quick sketch of the tramways test track, if trams can run on this they should have no problems in the garden. A friend is knocking up a templot track plan for me so I can start progressing some track, albeit indoors on the test track. David Is that for dual gauge track? Having the common rail swa...

The Melbourne suburban area is slowly starting to come back to life, including rail operations. Re: Thermo-electric powered tram
Thank you very much for your answers Melbournesparks! That make some things clear. I really like this tram you have build and I see the opportunities of this technique (as a 'low-tech' person). I am serious thinking of giving it a try. Perhaps with a tea light at first or use a burner from an old g...

Re: Thermo-electric powered tram
Just came across this thread, might be able to answer some questions! Am I correct if I understand that the builder of the tram on the LSC forum made a construction with some sort of tubes for the cooling of the 'cool' side? I mean, if you look at the picture of the device you linked, the big fan is...

Thanks for sharing, it works very well despite all the plants and foliage. Some of your trackwork is interesting towards the end of the video, what is it made of please? About half the track is made from flat 10x3mm aluminium bar. It's fitted into slotted wooden sleepers, similar to some larger min...

Apologies for digging up an oldish thread, I don't read this forum as often as I should. I do this, works pretty well.
