The patio end of the line has been expanded following the arrival of some cheap faller play train points, with some slight modification these linked to the mamod track exceptionally well as the height from the bottom of the sleeper to the top of the rail is identical. Unmodified track joiner.. http:...

Exploding track!

Just in case anyone else decides to do the same... I've been cutting up old broken bits of mamod track as I'm fitting together faller play train points and mamod track (the joys of a tight budget). It turns out that the quality of the alloy is quite poor and the heat from cutting the track is enough...

Todays progress was to finish fixing down the track and put a small amount of concrete mix under some of the spans for extra support.

Not the first run, but one of the first smooth runs, there's still a slightly dodgy patch where the mamod track joins to the hornby tinplate but I should be able to smooth that off :) The derailment at the end was due to me using a paperclip as a coupling linker between the mamod system and the camb...

Track laying has started today, but the weather is a bit too iffy to be running power cables across the lawn for drilling the bricks to fix the track in place http://i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo30/a3000inperil/IMAG0408.jpg Sweeping from the patio onto the raised bed http://i358.photobucket.com/alb...

Wheel diameter

When wheel diameter is quoted for a loco is it the full diameter including the flange or the diameter of the bit that touches the rail?

Thanks,

Philip

I had been considering the HGLW chassis with a pony truck to balance it out, that might happen in the future when push along becomes less fun :) All look very good and I'm impressed at the people who have managed to get the plastic bits off without breaking them, mine was pre-loved and they had been...

I've got the post van and coach to convert next. The post van is getting extended into a guards van. Oh and repairing the centre buffer and buffer beam which snapped due to some excessively excited play! An HGLW chassis probably would fit (the boiler is pretty hollow) but finding somewhere to put a ...

Finding out that the 'solid' Wolseley we bought as our daily car has bodged sills is taking all my spare time at the moment, building points is apparently a lower priority welding and panel beating so that we have a car!

Looks good, I'll have to have a go the hard way too :) I was taken in by the fact that the core plugs I've used in the past have been copper plated :(

The build brazil instructions online use a 42mm copper pipe for the boiler so the former sizes can be found there.

When I finally get around to building my first steam loco I'm considering using core plugs from a car engine, you can get 40mm ones for about 95p each and they should be a very good fit.

The Ravenser Odd and Saxon Town Railway

Finally the builders have cleared the majority of their mess off the back garden (still finding lumps of plastic, metal and broken tile) and so ground works started yesterday. The act of parliament for the line states that the railway must be unobtrusive, blend into the garden and not take the whole...

Mostly cider at the moment as my other half doesn't think it's worth the effort to do fruit wine as you wait so long to see if it has worked nicely. In the past I've made mead which is quite a quick brew, might need to do that again sometime soon (or the next time honey is on special offer) Blackber...

Once we've got rid of the builders, which will probably be winter at the rate they are dawdling, civil engineering will commence :) Probably some point building and finishing off the current project loco too if the weather is wet and the children asleep :)
